Result of PSG vs. Barcelona: Barça’s recovery effort stalls at the failed Messi PK; PSG for Champions League quarters

Despite having enough chances to make the Champions League tie interesting, Barcelona failed to recover against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, in the second leg of the round of 16. Barça wasted many opportunities to score goals in Paris and settled for a 1-1 draw. PSG advanced to the quarterfinals 5-2 in total.

The 4-1 home loss in the first leg was too much for Lionel Messi’s side, although Barça have won an admirable victory. They created 21 shots, 14 more than PSG, while having possession of the ball more than 70% of the time.

Barcelona looked stellar in the first 45 minutes and should have scored several goals, but the lack of precision and a saved penalty led the visitors to score just one, needing three more in the second half.

A goal in the 30th minute from a penalty kick by Kylian Mbappe, after an unfortunate foul by Clement Lenglet on Mauro Icardi, did not change much, as Barça still needed four goals to have a chance. Messi scored in the 37th minute, but failed to capitalize on the penalty kick before the end of the first half, which left the team with three in the second half – they would not get one.

PSG were without Neymar, who failed due to injury, but did not need him, betting mainly on defense to guarantee his place in the semi-finals.

The French team is now in the quarterfinals alongside Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund and Porto.
