Republicans criticize Biden’s move to lift sanctions momentum

Republicans are criticizing President Biden’s decision to give up Trump-era pressure to impose United Nations sanctions on Iran, while the government adopts a warmer tone towards Tehran.

“This is outrageous and dangerous. Biden just legalized Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping by selling weapons to Iran,” said Representative Joe Wilson, RS.C. “Because?”

“I agree, Joe,” replied Congressman Greg Steube, R-Fla., Who is on the House Judiciary and the Foreign Affairs Committees. “Why is Biden removing the UN sanctions that prohibit Putin from selling weapons to Iran? It seems to justify an investigation …”

The reaction comes to a move by the Biden government to end the Trump administration’s position on the “snack” of UN sanctions against Tehran.

The Trump administration triggered the snapback mechanism in August, which would restore all UN sanctions that expired in the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. That move came after a failed US effort to extend an arms embargo on Iran that was supposed to expired in October as part of the 2015 agreement and banned the regime from buying and selling weapons from allies.

However, this effort to lift sanctions was rejected by the UN Security Council, which said the United States had no authority to use the mechanism, as it was part of the agreement from which the United States had withdrawn.

Then Secretary of State Mike Pompeo rejected the UN’s arguments, claiming that it was part of the accompanying UN resolution, in which the United States still participated.

However, the Biden government sought to take a different approach to the Iranian regime and sought to resume the deal with Iran. As part of this, the State Department said that a letter was sent to the Council reversing the US position in the snapback.

BIDEN SAYS EUROPEAN ALLIES ‘AMERICA IS BACK’, LOOKING FOR BACK TO THE ERA TRUMP PAGE

Senator Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Called Biden’s stance on Iran “nothing short of reckless”.

“Not long after Iran-backed forces attacked Americans in Iraq, President Biden is desperately trying to enter into a failed deal and provide relief with sanctions for the Iranian regime,” Rubio said in a statement. “The president must make it clear that he understands that Khamenei cannot be trusted to honor international agreements and that the United States will not play the Iranians’ game for the next four years.”

The government’s action is one of several actions to reverse Trump’s foreign policy. Biden reentered the United States in the Paris climate agreement and suspended the US withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO).

In a speech to European leaders on Friday, Biden indicated that he was trying to turn the page on the Trump era.

“I am sending a clear message to the world, America is back, the transatlantic alliance is back and we are not looking back, we are looking forward together,” he said during a virtual speech at the annual Munich Security Conference.
