Republican Party representatives gain candidate support after comments on Chinese immigrants

California representatives. Young Kim (R) and Michelle Steel (R) revoked Texas Congressional candidate Sery Kim (R) ‘s endorsement after she said she does not want Chinese immigrants “here”.

In a statement released on Friday and shared with The Hill on Saturday, lawmakers said they “cannot in their right mind” continue to support Sery Kim, who is running to represent Texas’s 6th Congressional District.

Republican Party congressmen have already endorsed Sery Kim, who is Korean-American, in March beggining.

“As the first Korean-American Republican women to serve in Congress, we want to empower and elevate fellow AAPI members [Asian American and Pacific Island] community that wants to serve their communities ”, wrote the legislators.

Lawmakers said they apologized to Sery Kim, but noted that his words “were contrary to what we stand for.”

“We will continue to speak in support of our AAPI community,” they added.

The statement came after Sery Kim attacked China and Chinese immigrants during a Republican candidate forum on Wednesday, according to The Dallas Morning News.

“I don’t want them here at all,” said Sery Kim. “They steal our intellectual property. They give us the coronavirus. They are not responsible. ”

After the audience applauded his comments, Sery Kim said, “Frankly, I can say that because I am Korean.”

The comments came amid an increase in anti-Asian violence across America last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The coronavirus is believed to have originated in Wuhan, China.

The issue of anti-Asian hatred peaked last month, when a wave of shootings at various spas in the Atlanta area left eight dead, including six women of Asian descent.

Sery Kim confirmed for CNN that she made the comments, but said that they were addressed to the Communist Party of China and not to all Asian Americans.

In response to revoked endorsements, Sery Kim told CNN that she is “shocked that, in an effort to contain Asian-American hatred, the liberal media is targeting me, an Asian and an immigrant, in an effort to portray me as anti-Asian and anti-immigrant just for speaking out against the oppressive Chinese Communist Party. ”
