Report: Robert Saleh not well interviewed by Lions, Detroit eyeing Pat Fitzgerald

The Detroit Lions search for training is beginning to approach, but some big Friday rumors could change the trajectory of the top candidates in the search.

In the podcast “The A-Team” with Adam Clanton and Adam Wexler, Arron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle – which we interviewed about Rick Smith here – dropped some great news about the Lions’ coaching search and his search for 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.

“I was told that Saleh did not do very well in the Detroit interview, and it is not easy to get the job,” said Wilson.

This is obviously discouraging news for all Lions fans who hoped Saleh would get the job, but it is always important to consider rumors like this. Lions have done a good job of keeping the news in-house, so if something like that leaks, there’s always a chance that Lions will spread it on purpose. There are many teams interested in Saleh – the Jets, the Falcons have already interviewed him; Chargers and Jaguars are scheduled for Saturday – and Lions can benefit from disclosing incorrect information.

Still, it’s not exactly comforting to hear news like that.

Wilson did not stop releasing news about the search for Lions, however. He also noted that Lions are potentially interested in Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald.

“There is some interest in Pat Fitzgerald,” said Wilson.

Fitzgerald helped to recover a Wildcat team that had not been competitive since the early years. He held the position of head coach there for 15 years and is coming out of the 7-2 season with a big win over Auburn in the Citrus Bowl. Northwestern now has five wins in its past six years, including four consecutive bowl wins.

In another rumor, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said that Lions “was impressed”With former Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, whom the team interviewed last week.

The rumors are starting to spin, folks. Hopefully, this means that we are getting close to the end of this.
