With President Donald Trump pardoning war criminals and corrupt political allies, Lamar Jackson made a request on behalf of a friend.
The Baltimore Ravens quarterback tweeted Trump on Tuesday, asking for a commuted sentence for rapper Kodak Black.
Black and Jackson are childhood friends and attended the same elementary school in Florida.
Why Kodak Black is in prison
Black is serving a 46-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to federal gun possession charges in Florida in 2019. In his petition, Black admitted to falsifying information about background checks for gun purchases in two separate incidents.
Prosecutors said two of the purchased weapons were found at the crime scenes, while Black was charged with illegal possession of marijuana and criminal possession of a firearm when crossing the Canadian border with New York in 2019.
Black was released on bail on an unrelated sexual assault charge in South Carolina when he was arrested in 2019. This trial has been postponed several times.
Federal prosecutors deny Black’s request
Black and his legal team fought to cut their sentence, with their last request for a reduction denied last week.
“With all due deference, I actually come,” Black wrote in his request to federal prosecutors, according to a report by VladTV. “I acknowledge my mistakes and take full responsibility for my actions. I am not a bad or demented person. I am recoverable (sic) and I have the capacity and the potential to live a prosperous and positive life. “
Assistant US Attorney Bruce O. Brown wrote that Black did not provide a compelling reason to have his sentence reduced when he denied the request, according to the report.
“(Kodak Black) did not provide ‘extraordinary and compelling reasons’ to support his request for release,” wrote Brown in response to the rapper’s motion. “He declared further correction, (Kodak Black) did not give ANY reason to support his request for release. He merely declares that he is not a bad person and promises to participate in community programs aimed at helping the ‘younger generation’. This is simply inappropriate according to with the statute. ”
With Black failing to persuade prosecutors, Jackson executed the request for a higher authority. As of the time of this post, Trump has not responded.
