Conventional wisdom states that the PlayStation 5 is priced at $ 400 or $ 500, depending on the model you purchase. The standard” PS5 with Blu-Ray drive sells for $ 500, and there is an almost identical digital only version which does not have an optical drive and sells for a modest $ 400 (although it pales in comparison to the extremely economical $ 300 Xbox Series S) But it is difficult to use this argument when the PS5 has been sold out for three months at these prices, and the only real market for the console routinely sees prices two or three times as high.
Resellers across the Internet are purchasing Sony’s next-generation console using bots that can complete transactions much faster than any human being. Some retailers started cracking down on these reseller bots, but they remain a threat and prevented many people from obtaining consoles at launch and during subsequent refills at the retailer. Regardless, these consoles are being resold at a premium price. Right now on Ebay, for example, you can find the PS5 packaged with one or two accessories being sold for $ 650 or $ 1,500.
We’ve been giving the same advice for months: no console, not even the PS5, is worth spending hundreds on retail. This is especially true with so little content available that it is optimized specifically for the PS5. Wen suggests that you continue playing your PS4 for a few more months, until a significant amount of inventory reaches retailers later this year.
In the meantime, PS5 refueling does happen, and players with fast reaction times have managed to steal a console. To be clear, we recommend waiting for the stock to appear at retail. But if you need a PS5 right now, we haven’t seen one on eBay for less than $ 650. The average price on eBay seems to be around $ 800.
If you have decided that you are willing to pay hundreds above the list price to get a console now, you can take a look at StockX. At the moment, it looks like $ 700 is the minimum you can spend on a PS5, and prices are substantially higher.
