Producers Guild Awards 2021: complete list of winners

The Producers Guild of America Awards awarded Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” with the top prize, one of the main indicators for the Oscars, in particular the category of best film. Bypassing your closest competitors, including Emerald Fennell’s “up-and-coming young woman,” Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” and Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7”, this could end any doubt about whether the moving drama is running away. with the Oscar Grand Prix.

All acceptance speeches were pre-recorded with “Nomadland” giving a more produced and eye-catching presentation than what we saw in other awards.

It should be noted that Sam Mendes’ “1917” last year lost the Oscar after PGA and DGA victories for “Parasite”, which had only the coveted SAG cast award on its resume. Coincidentally, “Nomadland” was not nominated for the SAG in its main category, leaving an opening for a film to gain momentum and try to catch up. Another interesting observation is that every time a film won the award for best film at the Oscars, with no indication of direction, the film won the previous PGA, in the existence of the guild awards.

Pixar’s “Soul” won the animated feature film award, further consolidating its avant-garde status. Producer Dana Murray took advantage of Jodie Foster’s handbook, giving her pajama acceptance speech, with her two children entering the scene.

In the television categories, Pop TV’s “Schitt’s Creek” won the comedy in its final season, while Netflix’s “The Crown” won the drama series.

Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit” won the limited series award, while Disney Plus’s “Hamilton” won HBO’s “Bad Education” for notable producers of televised or broadcast films.

The pre-recorded production had two typos, first with host Steven Yeun (spelled as Steven Yuen) introducing “Minari” and later during the “In Memoriam” segment, incorrectly spelling the “Life of Pi” star Irrfan Khan (as Irrif Kahn).

The “In Memoriam” segment had 21 members of the community who died last year. The list included the following – Steve Bing, Chadwick Boseman, Harry Bring, Sue Bruce-Smith, Allan Burns, Kevin Burns, Stuart Cornfeld, Kirk Douglas, Charles Gordon, Buck Henry, Irrfan Khan, Thomas L. Miller, Tom Pollock, Rebecca Ramsey, Carl Reiner, Gene Reynolds, Pamela Ross, Ronald Schwary, Lynn Shelton, Fred Silverman and Jamie Tarses.
