LONDON – Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, underwent a successful medical procedure for a pre-existing heart disease, Buckingham Palace said on Thursday.
Philip, 99, was first admitted to a London hospital last month after feeling ill. The palace later confirmed that he had an infection, and he was transferred to another hospital on Monday to continue treatment and have tests done to check his heart condition.
“The Duke of Edinburgh yesterday underwent a successful procedure for pre-existing heart disease at St Bartholomew Hospital,” the palace said in a statement on Thursday. “His Royal Highness will remain in the hospital for treatment, rest and recovery for a few days.”
The palace had previously said that he should remain in the hospital at least until the end of the week.
St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, administered by the National Health Service, with public funding, claims to have the largest specialized cardiovascular service in Europe.

The queen and Philip received the Covid-19 vaccines in January.
