A possible military training plan for explosives hit the shore of a Florida beach on Sunday morning.
Broward’s Sheriff’s Office said a patrol officer discovered the device on the beach in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, about 30 miles north of Miami, at 2:30 am on Sunday.
“BSO deputies protected the area around the item and closed a small part of the beach,” the sheriff said in a statement.
The device had the word “inert” written on it, but “very cautiously,” officials at the scene called a bomb squad and the Air Force.
It was “determined that the marine mine was safe” and was removed from the beach, said the sheriff’s office, which was reopened.
The origin of the device remains unclear.
