Piedmont to build 100-bed hospital in South Carolina, ending long legal battle

Piedmont Medical Center, based in Rock Hill, SC, plans to open its 100-bed hospital in South Carolina this spring, ending a 15-year battle between healthcare systems competing for expansion there, according to The Charlotte Business Journal.

Piedmont Medical Center obtained approval to build a hospital in Fort Mill, SC, a suburb of Charlotte, NC, in 2006. But, the medical center faced legal challenges from several hospital systems, including Charlotte, NC-Atrium and Winston-Salem , NC-based Novant Health.

Atrium Health was also seeking approval to build a hospital in Fort Mill, according to the report.

Novant later gave up his legal challenge, and in 2019, the South Carolina Supreme Court denied an appeal by Atrium to block the construction of Piedmont’s Fort Mill hospital.

Plans for Piedmont’s Fort Mill hospital include the construction of a 200,000-square-foot, 100-bed hospital. The hospital will have a three-story sleeping tower and helipad.
