Pelosi says House will move impeachment if other efforts to remove Trump fail

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Sunday that lawmakers will move ahead with President Donald Trump’s impeachment if other efforts to remove him from office fail.

In a letter to Democrats, she said House majority leader Steny Hoyer will try to present a resolution on Monday calling on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment and declare that Trump is unable to perform the duties of your job title.

Hoyer, D-Md., Needs unanimous consent to file the application, said Pelosi, D-Calif. If he fails, lawmakers will bring him to the House floor for voting on Tuesday, she said.

“We are asking the vice president to respond within 24 hours,” she said, adding that impeachment legislation would follow.

Pelosi, who did not say when this legislation would be brought to plenary, said the House would act “urgently” because Trump “poses an imminent threat” to the constitution and democracy.

The previous Sunday, Senator Pat Toomey, R-Pa., Joined a handful of other Republicans to call for the president’s resignation, but said there was not enough time for Congress to challenge Trump before he stepped down.

But Whip majority MP Jim Clyburn, DS.C., said the House could still accuse Trump and delay sending the articles to the Senate until after Joe Biden’s first 100 days.

Speaking to ABC News, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y. said that condemning Trump would prevent him from running for office again.

Pelosi’s announcement comes four days after a violent pro-Trump crowd attacked the United States Capitol in an event that left five people dead, including a police officer.
