House Speaker Nancy Pelosi defended the Democrats’ search for impeachment on Thursday, despite repeated calls by President Biden for the union of a divided nation.
Pelosi said the House of Representatives will send the impeachment article against former President Trump “soon” because he must be held responsible for the January 6 riot on Capitol Hill, which left five dead. She “is not concerned” about impeachment to sow further division, she said.
“The fact is that the President of the United States has committed an act of inciting insurrection,” Pelosi said Thursday at a Capitol news conference. “I don’t think it’s very unifying to say, oh, let’s just forget about it and move on. That’s not how you unify.”

During his inaugural speech, Biden talked about bringing the country closer and so that people on the other side of the corridor could hear and give each other a chance to move on. Impeachment is inherently divisive and Republicans have asked Biden and Democrats to stop the process of bringing Trump to trial, especially since he is no longer in office.
But Pelosi spoke of the trauma that members and officials suffered on January 6, when a crowd invaded the Capitol in an attempt to prevent Congress from certifying Biden’s electoral victory. More than just the objects and property that were stolen and destroyed, she said construction workers are still dealing with the consequences of the attack.

“I am more concerned about the damage they have caused to our team, to our colleagues in Congress, to the custody team at the United States Capitol,” said Pelosi. “This is damage. This is damage that must be dealt with.”
Pelosi said that the House has an obligation to defend the integrity of Congress and not fulfilling that responsibility would be “detrimental to unity”.
“It is our responsibility to protect and defend the United States Constitution. And that is what we will do. Pelosi did not provide details on when the House would send the impeachment article to the Senate, except to indicate that it would be in the next few days. The House’s impeachment managers are preparing for a trial. “We are ready,” said Pelosi.
