“To protect our democracy, we must now subject the security of the United States Capitol Complex to rigorous scrutiny,” said Pelosi in a statement. “To that end, I asked Lieutenant General Russel Honoré (retired), a respected leader with experience in dealing with crises, to lead an immediate review of Capitol’s security infrastructure, interagency and command and control processes and procedures.”
Pelosi addressed efforts to protect the Capitol after the deadly siege at a news conference on Friday, saying: “After the attack on the Capitol complex last week, there was an unprecedented mobilization of security on Capitol Hill. I want to express my gratitude to our Capitol Police, to the National Guard who are here to protect our democracy. ”
The Capitol riot came after Trump repeatedly made false claims that the election was stolen from him and asked his supporters to fight.
In the wake of the deadly siege, security was intensely increased at the Capitol before President-elect Joe Biden took office, which is scheduled to take place in just a few days, on January 20.
Pelosi said during his press conference: “We must subject this entire complex to scrutiny in the light of what has happened and the fact that possession is coming.”
The House spokeswoman added during her press conference: “Members are moving forward with strong oversight of the committees, of course, to have a review after the action. There is great interest in Congress on a 9/11 type commission – a external commission to conduct this after reviewing the action. However, I am very grateful to General Honoré for assuming this responsibility. “
Pelosi described Honoré as “a respected leader with experience in dealing with crises”.
