Pelosi and Schumer say US Capitol policeman killed during insurrection will be honored on Capitol Hill

Sicknick died after being hit on the head by a fire extinguisher during the hour-long struggle for control of the United States Capitol on January 6.

According to a press release, a ceremonial arrival will take place at 9:30 pm ET on Tuesday on the Eastern Front of the Capitol. A screening period will begin at 10 pm for members of the U.S. Capitol Police and continue through the night.

The move came after several lawmakers asked that Sicknick be honored on Capitol Hill.

Two Republicans from South Carolina introduced a bill that would allow Sicknick to be honored on Capitol Hill before his burial at Arlington National Cemetery.

Congressman Ralph Norman and Senator Tim Scott introduced the legislation on Thursday. If approved, a plaque would be placed on the Capitol in memory of Sicknick and would allow the Arms Sergeant to pay for Sicknick’s funeral services.

The union representing the grassroots officers “welcome the proposal”, which would need to be approved with unanimous consent.

“Officer Sicknick died because he put the lives of members of Congress and his team before his own safety – he did his duty,” said Gus Papathanasiou, president of the union representing the grassroots officers. “We must celebrate his life and service with respect and dignity”.

Lying in the state is usually reserved for US government leaders, but two US Capitol Police officers shot dead in 1998 were the first private citizens to lie in honor on Capitol Hill. Norman was trying to keep that precedent for Sicknick.

“The attacks on the Capitol on January 6 show us that, now more than ever, we must support our police,” Norman said in a statement. “Just as the US Capitol Police put themselves in danger last week to protect the seat of American democracy, the same selflessness and sacrifice is made every day by police officers across our nation. Each of them deserves our honor and support. . “
