  • Patrice Evra attacked Liverpool fans because of Luis Suarez’s racism incident
  • Suarez was fined and banned in eight games for using the word ‘bold’ in Evra
  • Evra criticized Red supporters for a ‘lack of class and respect’ since the case
  • The former Manchester United defender also shared a letter of apology from Liverpool

Patrice Evra criticized Liverpool fans for lack of “class and respect”, while the former Manchester United player shared a letter from the Merseyside club apologizing for the Luis Suarez incident in 2011.

The Uruguayan striker was banned for eight games and fined £ 40,000 for using the word ‘bold’ in relation to Evra during a Premier League match between Liverpool and United in Anfield in 2011.

But immediately after Evra made the charges against Suarez, Liverpool defended his player and even wore T-shirts in support of the striker before a league game against Wigan in 2012.

When Suarez returned from his suspension at the end of the season, he declined Evra’s offer to shake hands with the Manchester United captain in the return game at Old Trafford in 2012.

Along with the image of a 2019 apology letter from Liverpool Chief Executive Peter Moore, Evra attacked Liverpool fans who abused him in the years after the incident.

Evra put the letter caption before Manchester United’s Premier League tie with Liverpool on Sunday: “I would like Liverpool fans to have the same respect and class as you, Peter Moore.”

It is the first time that Evra shares the letter from Liverpool, which discussed a ‘collective regret’ in supporting Suarez after the Football Association banned him for racist abuse.

The French defender opened his mouth about the Suarez incident during an episode of Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football in October 2019 and Moore felt compelled to write to Evra after hearing his ordeal.

The letter said: ‘The reason for my correspondence is direct and necessary, we owe you an apology. It was negligence on our part not to apologize for a long time and this is a mistake for which we must take responsibility.

‘As a club, we did not meet our own high standards of inclusion, equality and justice when confronted by its serious, but fully justified, allegations eight years ago. It is a matter of collective regret.

‘I hope that subsequent events have shown that we have learned lessons from the period in question. As painful as these lessons were, they were also absolutely necessary and I want to assure you that we will continue to address them going forward. ‘

Evra revealed in January 2020 that Moore and Liverpool sent him an apology for the entire scandal following his 2019 appearance on Monday Night Football.

In addition, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher and current club captain Jordan Henderson – who were playing for the Merseyside club at the time – revealed that the Reds made a mistake in publicly supporting Suarez and apologized to him.

Speaking at Sky Sports, Evra said: ‘I was pleased that Jamie Carragher had apologized. I received a personalized letter from Peter Moore and I was very moved by it.

‘(He sent the letter) three days after the show. I was like, “Thank you so much, this is really touching my heart.”

“But I was very disappointed for a long time with a big club like Liverpool supporting a cause like that.”

The FA handed Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani a three-match suspension after he used the same racial term on social media with a friend, despite the Uruguayan’s insistence that it was a friendly.

Suarez joined the Uruguayan federation to condemn the English federation for banning Cavani, which they described as a ‘discriminatory act’.
