Palestinian killed by IDF during clashes with stones

IDF soldiers killed a Palestinian on Friday during clashes with stones in the West Bank, a Reuters witness said. The man, initially identified as Sheikh Atef Yousef Hanaisheh, was shot in the head and taken to a hospital near the West Bank city. Nablus, where he died later, said the Palestinian health ministry. Asked to comment, IDF said the incident was being examined. Hanaisheh, who is about 40, was involved in a weekly protest against Israeli settlements in the village of Beit Dajan, near Nablus. A group of Palestinians threw stones at two IDF soldiers stationed there, and the soldiers then opened fire, said a Reuters witness, a photographer. A group of Palestinians took the man away. Palestinians want to establish a state in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, territories that Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war, which is under military and civilian control of the IDF.

The Palestinians, who have limited self-government in the West Bank, say Israel’s settlements there will deny them a viable state. Most countries see settlements as illegal under international law. Israel disputes this, citing security needs, as well as biblical and historical ties to the land. Peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians failed in 2014.The Jerusalem Post team contributed to this report
