The twice Olympic swimmer for the gold medal Klete Keller was indicted on seven different charges on Thursday in connection with his alleged involvement in the US Capitol riots last month, according to USA Today.
Keller, according to the report, was charged in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia for intentionally and illegally entering a restricted area, interfering in official government affairs, engaging in disorderly conduct to interrupt a session of Congress and interfering with law enforcement during civil unrest, among other things.
Keller was recognized by an FBI agent, who said he identified him both by his height – Keller is six feet tall – and by the US Team jacket he wore that day. He also had several social media posts supporting former President Donald Trump, although his accounts have been disabled.
The 38-year-old surrendered himself to authorities in Colorado nine days after the Capitol riots and was released without bail. Keller, according to the Washington Post, faces up to 15 years in prison.
Keller is reportedly one of the countless violent pro-Trump supporters who invaded the United States Capitol on January 6 in an effort to try to somehow overturn the election results. Five people died in the attacks, including a policeman, and another 140 were injured. The House of Representatives has since impeached Trump for his involvement – marking his second impeachment. The impeachment trial is underway in the Senate.
Keller has won gold twice in his career, helping the US team to win the 4x200m freestyle relay at the 2004 Games in Athens and the 2008 Games in Beijing alongside Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. He also won bronze twice in the 400 meters in Athens and in the 2000 Games in Sydney. The 4×200 relay team also won silver in Sydney with the help of Keller. He retired after the 2008 Games and worked as a commercial real estate agent in Colorado.
