Olivia Wilde says she has a “hole ban policy” on the film sets she directs.
The 36-year-old actress and director discussed her decision while talking about making Variety’s “Directors on Directors” films with Emerald Fennell.
Wilde said he learned that she thrives in a directorial role because it offers much more motivation and allows for focus, while taking on the role of a character can be “exhausting”.
“It’s constant, I find it very energizing,” said Wilde of the direction. “The relentless questions and answers make you dizzy. And then, of course, you face a plan when you get home. But it’s a different kind of exhaustion … That’s one of the reasons I really prefer to drive, because I I think the constant hum of intensity and energy illuminates me. “

As a director, Wilde discussed the idea of following his instincts.

“Someone, who is a very established actor and director in this industry, gave me really terrible advice that was helpful, because I knew I had to do the opposite,” said Wilde.
“They said, ‘Listen, the way to get respect on a set is to have three discussions a day. Three great discussions that restore your power, remind everyone who is in charge, be the predator. ‘ This is the opposite of my process. And I don’t want any of that. “
She said her policy of banning “holes” from the set is to get rid of the hierarchy between the cast and crew.
“The failure-prohibition policy puts everyone on the same level. I also realized as an actress for years how the set hierarchy separated the actors from the crew in a very strange way that serves no one,” said Wilde.

She continued: “I think the actors would like to know more about what is going on there when you are pulling my focus? What is this lens shift? But the idea of not disturbing the actors and keeping them apart, and not Don’t look at them. I think it makes everyone very anxious. “

Wilde is currently directing “Don’t Worry Darling”, with Florence Pugh and Harry Styles. Styles, to whom she is romantically linked after her separation from fiance Jason Sudeikis, replaced Shia LaBeouf.

It was reported in September that LaBeouf dropped out of the role due to scheduling conflicts, before being replaced by Styles. Months later, singer FKA Twigs filed a lawsuit against LaBeouf for alleged abuse during their relationship, which he denies.
“Don’t Worry Darling” is a film adapted from a script by Katie Silberman. It is situated in a California desert during the 1950s.
