Olivia Wilde and Shia LaBeouf Clashed Over Music Video Directing Credit

Rainey Qualley’s music video for “Love Me Like You Hate Me” featured a backstage drama.

The news came on December 24, revealing that the reason Shia LaBeouf was replaced by Harry Styles in Olivia Wilde’s new directing effort, “Don’t Worry Darling”, is because the filmmaker fired LaBeouf due to his bad behavior in the pre-production. It was originally reported that LaBeouf was leaving the film because of a scheduling conflict, but Variety reported that the actor did indeed violate Wilde’s “ass-banning policy” on set. As revealed this week by The Hollywood Reporter, the dismissal of “Don’t Worry Darling” resulted in another confrontation between Wilde and LaBeouf on a different project: Rainey Qualley’s music video for “Love Me Like You Hate Me”.

Qualley released the video clip “Love Me Like You Hate Me” on October 23, and the project quickly went viral thanks to its explicit NSFW content and the involvement of actors Margaret Qualley and Shia LaBeouf. Among the collaborators who worked on the video clip were Natasha Braier, director of photography for LaBeouf “Honey Boy”, the choreographic collective JA, and frequent producer and collaborator for LaBeouf Luke Turner.

Among the final credits of the video was a “special thanks to Olivia Wilde”. As reported by THR, Wilde received a special mention because she originally directed the video “as a favor to the sisters, specifically Margaret Qualley, with whom she previously worked while directing the short film ‘Wake Up'”.

THR reports: “After ending the production of ‘Love Me Like You Hate Me’, Wilde had a certain amount of time to finish his version of the video. Before that period was over, LaBeouf sent his own cut of the video he worked on in partnership with Turner. “

When LaBeouf sent his cut of the video clip to the team, Wilde replied that “she would be happy to take a look and send her cut soon”. LaBeouf allegedly did not take the note well and “replied again suggesting that the correct answer would have been to write a thank you and that ‘we should continue with this’ in reference to what he sent.”

THR spoke to a source who saw the group’s email and said that LaBeouf also told Wilde: “” Great jazz musicians know when they shouldn’t play. ” The THR report continues: “At that point, Wilde left the project (writing back, ‘I’m out’) and his name was removed from the music video because of what some considered LaBeouf’s unprofessional behavior.”

The music video “Love Me Like You Hate Me” was released with Turner credited as its director. After the video premiered, LaBeouf’s ex-girlfriend and “Honey Boy” co-star FKA Twigs revealed that she filed a lawsuit against LaBeouf for alleged sexual assault and abuse. There followed news of Wilde’s dismissal of LaBeouf, followed by confirmation that Netflix had erased LaBeouf’s name from the pages of the FYC campaign for the next Oscar candidate “Pieces of Women.”

IndieWire contacted representatives from Wilde and LaBeouf for further comments.
