Current songs for a dying man democracy, who needs them! Talk to anyone who follows you closely popular musical trends and they will tell you that Olivia Rodrigo, a child on the Disney Channel, must debut first in 2021 with a melodramatic pop ballad about the pain of a first breakup and learn to drive, launched on January 7, entitled “driver’s license . ”(All lowercase letters, how is the trend this time period.) Give the DMV royalties!

According Advertising panel, in the first three days the “driver’s license” was made available, the song sold 16,000 copies and was broadcast 21 million times in the United States., the video clip has been viewed more than 19.6 million times. Pop Crave reports “Driver’s license” has the “biggest day streams for a song by a female artist in the history of Spotify in the USA, with more than 5.688 MILLION”. Rodrigo’s profile is clearly growing, and fast.

Music is a gloriously distressed pop with a theatrical arrangement usually reserved for more advanced stars in their careers – but there are no more rules, why not go straight to the gate with a larger production than life, a big bridge influenced by Taylor Swift and a devastating crescendo. The first disruption may seem like a disaster; driving around an ex’s house or seeing him in the school hallway can be distressing – shouldn’t a song about it do the same? Or at least offer some cathartic release? “Driver’s license” does both.

I like Description of Justin Curto of the sonic touchstones of music in Vulture: “‘driver’s license‘ [is] like a Frankenstein version of the past decade or so in pop. Rodrigo’s calm moments remind Billie Eilish it’s her the hymns resemble Lord, with pieces of expensive alessia in between. She’s also, of course, struggling with a teenage, suburban anguish that Eilish, Lorde and Cara individually made their business cards … there’s something for almost every type of pop listener to hang on to. ” Course is derivative – name any contemporary and confessional singer / songwriter and there will certainly be traces here – but it is also a banger – something very challenging for a powerful piano ballad to become.

But then, who is Olivia Rodrigo? I’m so glad you asked.

WHO?

Olivia Rodrigo is a 17 year old fashion girl from California who started her career like many talented teenagers who appear on Spotify and TikToks playlists apparently out of nowhere: on the Disney Channel. From 2016 to 2019, she starred as Paige Olvera, “a guitarist who makes viral videos with her best friend, alongside other stars Madison Hu and [YouTuber] Jake Paul, ” according Advertising panel, on the Disney TV show Bizaardvark. She also got the lead role of Nini Salazar-Roberts in the reboot, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, a Character by Gabriella Montez / Vanessa Hudgens of the original. The second season is in production, so it doesn’t look like Rodrigo is going to stop acting anytime soon.

In addition, there is apparently a real drama between Rodrigo and some other Disney stars, which fans believe is the source of material for the song “driver’s license”.

WHAT?

As Rodrigo’s success is clearly about a breakup, listeners theorize that it is actor Joshua Basset, 20, his ex-boyfriend and co-star in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. According Glam, they split last year and Basset was soon “visa” with 21-year-old actress Sabrina Carpenter, another Disney student. Considering some letters of “driver’s license”: “And you probably have that blonde girl / Who always made me doubt / She is much older than me / She is everything that makes me insecure / Yes, today I drove through the suburbs / Because how could I love another person? ”Fan reading gives – and adds juicy and gossip content dimension to the single.

WHAT, AGAIN, FOR MY OLD ASS? IT’S VERY HIGH HERE!

It’s just a song – a debut single – that made Rodrigo notable for those unfamiliar with the original Disney Channel programming, and that’s power and influence for me, baby!

“When I thought of a ‘driver’s license’, I was experiencing a heartbreak that was so confusing to me, so multifaceted,” she said in a statement about music. “Putting all these feelings into one song made it all seem so much simpler and clearer – and at the end of the day, I think that’s really the purpose of writing a song. There’s nothing like sitting at the piano in my room and writing a really sad song. It really is my favorite thing in the world. ”It certainly worked with the“ driver’s license ”, but is that a sufficient equation to sustain a full career?

WHY DO YOU CARE?

I am curious to know the origins of all successes and to see if a “driver’s license” is a one-stroke wonder. With the Disney machine behind it, I doubt it. AND it’s fun to see a song released in one week become an instant hit the next, sue me.

Also, apparently Taylor Swift is a fan, which is a big problem for Rodrigo herself, who describes herself as Swiftie. “Beside Taylor on the us i tunes chart, I’m in a puddle of tears”, she wrote on instagram January 9, when the “driver’s license” reached number three, just below Swift is sleepy Ever trails “It’s time to go (bonus track)” and “right where you left me (bonus track).” Swift commented: “I say this is my baby and I am very proud”.

Now, of course, Rodrigo’s “driver’s license” is No. 1 on the iTunes and Spotify U.S. chart.

UH, BUT BECAUSE DO I NEED TO KNOW THIS PERSON?

That’s between you and God, but get ready to hear “driver’s license” everywhere soon if you’re still not listening everywhere. In addition, Rodrigo’s debut EP is expected later this year, so get in or out of the way.
