Oakland Athletics strengthens bullpen, closes deals with Yusmeiro Petit, Sergio Romo

OAKLAND, Calif. – Veteran reliever Yusmeiro Petit has agreed to a $ 2.55 million one-year contract to stay with Oakland Athletics, pending a physical examination, his agent said.

The deal can pay right-handed Petit up to $ 3 million based on incentives for games launched, said agent Rafael Godoy late on Sunday.

“He’s excited to be back. It was his first choice all the time, ” Godoy told the AP via text message.” The team has been in touch all winter. ”

Also on Sunday, Oakland was closing on a $ 2.25 million, one-year contract with veteran right-wing reliever Sergio Romo, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan. He must also still undergo a physical examination.

The two additions to the current champions of AL West would provide significant experience to manager Bob Melvin’s bullpen, who lost closer to Liam Hendriks at the free agency to the Chicago White Sox. Petit and Romo have 13 years of experience in the major league each, and the two pitchers are very familiar with the Bay Area, as they also played for the San Francisco Giants.

Petit, 36, will return for a fourth season in Oakland, having scored 2-1 with an ERA of 1.66 in 26 games and 21⅔ entries during the short 2020 season of 60 games. It is versatile due to its ability to launch multiple innings.

Romo, who turns 37 on March 4, had 1-2 with 4.05 ERA and five saves and 23 eliminations in 24 games and 20 entries last year for Minnesota.

A’s pitchers and catchers were due to perform at the club’s spring training center in Mesa, Arizona on Tuesday. The first workout is Wednesday. Oakland reached the playoffs in the past three years – losing the AL wild card game in 2018 and 19, then in four AL Division Series games to rival Houston Astros last year – but faced scrutiny for a quiet offseason.

Atlético were the first to report Romo’s pending signature.
