NVIDIA’s latency reduction technology arrives on ‘Overwatch’

If you play Overwatch on the PC often, there is a good chance that you have disabled settings such as v-sync and triple buffer to reduce the input delay of the system as much as possible. And if you still feel like you’re missing out on some photos, additional help is on the way. As of today, NVIDIA’s Reflex Latency Reduction technology is available at Overwatch PTR, allowing those with relatively recent NVIDIA GPUs to verify the feature before reaching the official launch of the game.

Reflex works by limiting the number of frames that your GPU queues in selected scenes, thereby reducing the work that your CPU needs to do. With the feature enabled, NVIDIA states that you will see a reduction of up to 50% in system latency, which should help make the game more responsive. As you can see in the chart below, the effect is more noticeable on older and more affordable GPUs, such as the GTX 1660 Super. However, even NVIDIA’s latest flagship gets a bump, although it is a separate question whether you will be able to tell the difference between 26ms and 16ms in latency.

As long as you have a GTX 900 series GPU or later, you can try Reflex on Overwatch downloading the latest GeForce Game Ready driver from NVIDIA, switching to the PTR client and enabling the feature in the game’s display settings.
