NJ climate: winter storm warnings issued with heavy and heavy snow, dangerous driving conditions are expected

The National Weather Service has updated its winter storm clocks for winter storm warnings before a slow-moving coastal storm that can blow more than a foot of snow across much of New Jersey and bring violent winds that can trigger flooding throughout the coast and make driving difficult.

The warnings warn drivers that dangerous road conditions are likely to occur in the early hours of Sunday and most of the day on Monday, as the snow gets heavy and strong gusts of wind cause snow that will reduce visibility.

“Traveling can be very difficult or impossible,” say the storm warnings, noting that the heaviest snow and strongest winds can impact the morning or night journeys on Monday.

Camden County

  • Effective: 10am Sunday to 10am Tuesday
  • Forecast: Heavy snow forecast. Total snow accumulation from 6 to 12 inches, with gusts of wind up to 45 mph.

Gloucester and Salem counties

  • Effective: 10am Sunday to 10am Tuesday
  • Forecast: Strong mixed precipitation is expected. Total accumulation of snow and hail from 7 to 13 inches, along with a light layer of ice and winds with gusts up to 40 mph.

Burlington, Monmouth and Ocean counties

  • Effective: 1pm Sunday to 10am Tuesday
  • Forecast: Heavy snow forecast. Total snow accumulation of 7 to 13 inches, with gusts of wind up to 45 mph

Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset, Warren

  • Effective: 5 pm Sunday to 1 pm Tuesday.
  • Forecast: Heavy snow is expected, with a total snow accumulation of 11 to 15 inches and gusts of winds up to 35 mph.

Winter weather warnings

Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties

  • Effective: 10am Sunday to 10am Tuesday
  • Forecast: expected snow, with total snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches and gusts of winds up to 50 mph.

Coastal Ocean County

  • Effective: 10am Sunday to 10am Tuesday
  • Forecast: expected snow. Total accumulation of snow from 1 to 3 inches and winds with gusts up to 55 mph.

Winter storm clock

A winter storm alert is in effect at midnight on Monday (late Sunday night) and continues until 6am on Tuesday Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Unity counties. It is possible to snow heavily, with accumulations of snow from 6 to 12 inches and winds with gusts up to 72 km / h.

Updated snow forecast map for parts of NJ

In an updated forecast map released late Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service’s Mount Holly office increased its snowfall projections in some counties and decreased in others. Among the notable changes from the morning map to the new map:

  • The first projections of 20 to 30 centimeters of snow increased to 30 to 45 centimeters in several counties, including Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth and Morris.
  • The first projections of 6 to 8 inches of snow increased to 20 to 30 centimeters in Sussex and Warren.
  • Early projections in the Vineland area of ​​Cumberland County fell slightly, from 6 to 8 inches of snow to 4 to 6 inches.
  • Early projections in the Toms River area in Ocean County dropped from 6 to 8 inches to 3 to 4.
