Nicole Kidman recalls the ‘disturbing’ impact that the filming of ‘The Undoing’ had on her personality

Nicole Kidman is known for completely immersing herself in the characters she plays, but her most recent project, “The Undoing”, really affected her physical and mental health.

The Oscar winner, 53, admitted that playing Grace, whose husband is on trial for murder, in the HBO drama created a “restlessness” in his personality.

“Suddenly, I was in this place. There was a kind of restlessness in my personality, where I was restless and there was duress about who I was,” explained Kidman in an episode of the podcast “WTF With Marc Maron”.

“In fact, I got really sick [in the middle of filming], “She revealed.” I think this is a big thing that happens to actors. I went down for a week, because your immune system doesn’t know the difference between taking action and the truth when you’re doing those [draining roles]. “

The “Big Little Lies” star added how she tried to keep her work separate from her family life, but failed to develop “a technique for saying to my brain and body: ‘Oh, this is just acting'”.

“I didn’t learn to clean this up. It doesn’t really work for me,” she described. “I’m going home and I’m not sleeping well, and I’m not feeling well … It’s very disturbing for me.”

Kidman said earlier that her husband, Keith Urban, and his daughters, Sunday, 12, and Faith, 9, helped “bring her back to reality” while playing Grace, who was “very exhausting”.

“You have to laugh when you’re doing things like that. Otherwise, it’s very distressing,” the Emmy winner told Australia’s morning program “Sunrise”. “I almost work from a deeper point now and therefore it is sometimes very tiring.”

Fortunately, Kidman said her family was able to live in New York with her while she worked.

“My family was with me, and just having my daughters, and Keith, and having dinner with them brings back the immediate reality. Suddenly, the limits are set,” she described.

Kidman called being with his family “that place where I can breathe and feel”.

“Keith provides an enormous amount of that and we hope that we can provide this for him when he is on tour, because that is the benefit of having a close family,” she said excitedly.
