Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem talk to play Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in the new Amazon film directed by Social Network scribe Aaron Sorkin

Together, they created the project for the American television sitcom and remain one of the most classic couples on TV.

And Oscar-winning actors Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem are currently in negotiations to play Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, respectively, in a new film for Amazon by screenwriter and director Aaron Sorkin.

As reported by Deadline on Monday, movie stars are being courted by Sorkin’s Being The Ricardos, who takes a look at the iconic couple behind the revolutionary 1950s comedy series I Love Lucy.

The film is said to follow the pair of stars – who played the showbiz couple Lucy and Ricky Ricardo for six seasons from 1951 to 1957 – during a dramatic week of production on the Emmy-winning program, from the Monday table read until Friday live studio filming.

Throughout the film, the couple faces a series of crises that can end both their career and their marriage.

Lucy and Desi were married for 20 years, from 1940 to 1960, and had two children together: Lucie Arnaz, 69, and Desi Arnaz Jr., 67 ..

I Love Lucy remains the gold standard to this day when it comes to winning comedies on television, thanks mainly to Ball’s incredible comic timing and the star couple’s electrical chemistry.

Sorkin, the Oscar-winning screenwriter behind The Social Network and The Newsroom, among many others, was initially set only to write the new film.

However, after directing his excellent film for Netflix, The Trial Of The Chicago 7, from last year, he also decided to link himself as director to this new project.

Being The Ricardos reportedly attracted interest from Cate Blanchett, before Australian actor Kidman started thinking about the role.

Nicole can currently be seen on HBO Max in the limited series The Undoing, and recently also completed another adaptation for a Liane Moriarty book series after the acclaimed Big Little Lies, titled Nine Perfect Strangers.

The Hours star also finished filming a new feature entitled The Northman, starring Anya Taylor-Joy in The Queen’s Gambit and also Nicole in Big Little Lies, Alexander Skarsgard.

It is interesting to note that Kidman is well aware of the recreation of a classic television icon – she played the witch Samantha Stephens in the somewhat erroneous Bewitched update of 2005, starring Elizabeth Montgomery.

Skyfall actor Bardem will be seen in October in the sci-fi epic Duna, and is currently filming Disney’s live action, The Little Mermaid, as King Triton.
