The Bears would love to be successful this offseason, switching to a franchise quarterback like Deshaun Watson or Russell Wilson. But if they fail to do so, the reserve option may be to stay with the quarterback they have: Nick Foles.
Bellows remains under contract with the Bears with an affordable salary cap of $ 6.7 million in 2021. The number of the Bellows dead ceiling would be higher than that, so there is no incentive for the Bears to get rid of it. Mitchell Trubisky becomes a free agent on March 17 and should not be back in Chicago, but there is every reason to believe that Bellows will remain on the list.
As noted by the Chicago Sun-TimesBears general manager Ryan Pace sounded positive when talking about Bellows in this off-season.
“I respect the way he handled a lot of adversity this year, not just for himself in the quarterback room,” said Pace. “He was a leader in the room as an initiator or backup. AND . . . when he was playing, there were some things that, to be fair to him, the offensive line was a little unstable and the racing game was not quite where we wanted it to be. “
Pace knows that his job is at stake if the Bears don’t improve in 2021, and it’s hard to believe that he wouldn’t want to upgrade as a defender this season. But updating as a defender may be easier said than done, and the Bears can scan the scene and find out that they can’t get anyone better than Bellows.
