NFL rumors: rumors that bears would include Nick Foles in a potential commercial package for Carson Wentz

Windy City Gridiron contributor Brandon Robinson drew a lot of attention on Friday when he tweeted that the Chicago Bears have the best deal on Carson Wentz. Robinson expanded further on what he has heard about the future of the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback during an appearance on Saturday morning at 670 The Score with Joe Ostrowski.

First, Robinson talked about what the Bears offer for Wentz looks like.

OSTROWSKI: Do the Bears still have Carson Wentz’s main offer?

ROBINSON: Not from my source. The last time I spoke to my source was when I tweeted [original report]. But from what I’ve heard from other people I trust, they still have the best offer. And I just don’t think that is changing.

OSTROWSKI: After your report, during the rest of the afternoon and into the evening, there were subsequent reports, just a lot of different things were released about that offer. What is the Bears offer for Wentz?

ROBINSON: So, as I understand it, they had – originally, they had a second and some other reeds attached to it. But that was before the Colts reached the top and offered even more. I’m not sure what they offered, but I assume it was two pairs. So, I’m assuming that the Bears are probably offering now, # 20 [in the 2021 NFL Draft] and future choices, which are likely to be a third round choice in 2022.

OSTROWSKI: Do you think the choice of the first round would be the only one in the 2021 draft? Is that your guess?

ROBINSON: If they added another choice, it would probably be like a fifth or sixth round choice. It would be nothing substantial.

He later mentioned that the Eagles MVP in the Super Bowl, Nick Foles, could be involved in the deal.

OSTROWSKI: […] I’ll tell you what, what did they do a year ago with Foles? Certainly not this route. So, at least, they are changing the process a bit. With Foles, it looked like, ‘Let’s get an average quarterback and we’ll be fine because we have an elite defense’. As you said, walking low, but still with a high roof for Wentz.

ROBINSON: As I understand it, the [Bears are] trying to take out bellows [Chicago] with this business. […] And it probably has more to do with Wentz and basically how he is a diva than with the cap. […] With the perception I heard from Wentz, there is no way [Foles being on the team] it could happen.

Robinson also went into the Bears’ motivation to make the switch.

OSTROWSKI: There have been many reports towards the end of the season about Wentz and Pederson. And then they fire Pederson and bring in a guy from Frank Reich, so you can connect the dots and say ‘OK, they’ll try to make it work with Wentz.’ What do you know about Wentz’s personality and how he likes to deal? Because Doug Pederson doesn’t seem like a very difficult guy to live with. He kind of goes with the flow and was tired of hearing his bosses by the tail over there.

ROBINSON: Right. So, what I recently discovered is that apparently not everyone is aware of how Wentz is acting, and they still think he’s a guy from North Dakota who is balanced and all that. But when in fact it is just the opposite. He is a complete diva in that locker room that is completely inaccessible to that team and does not want to do anything in that organization. And if he were anyone else, like, say, Lamar Jackson, or Russel Wilson, or Cam Newton – do you see where I’m going with this? He would be criticized repeatedly.

OSTROWSKI: I don’t think the public has a clue. I think they saw him on the pitch, and he looked terrible in 2020, and he can sometimes look like a crying baby on the sidelines or during games. But yes, I don’t think people think that. Okay, so why do the Bears want it?

ROBINSON: The Bears want him … it’s because the organization still believes – and I know that for sure – that he still has generational talent. And the fact that he has generational talent and they have a defender coach who worked with Wentz, had a great relationship with Wentz, contrary to the reports out there, and his best years were with John DeFilippo, they think they can resurface. in your career. Because, really, he had a horrible year. But when you consider how much he disliked the coaching staff and him literally doing his own thing on the field, calling his own moves and making his own shots, anyone who knows anything about football and how it works, you would expect him to play badly. So, they think that if they manage to settle everything with him and move on with the situation, they can put their career on track.

There’s a lot to unpack here, so let’s start thinking about a few points:

  • It doesn’t look like the Eagles will have multiple choices in the first round for Wentz. But it seems that at least one is at stake. What do you think of nº 20, a choice of the third round in 2022 and Bellows for Wentz?

  • Not transcribed here, but Robinson and Ostrowski talked about Bears ownership, forcing Matt Nagy and Ryan Pace to win now. They are really desperate. It would make sense, then, that they were the team to give up more for a risky bet like Wentz.
  • Pace was not exactly the best quarterback evaluator! Significant investments in Mike Glennon, Mitchell Trubisky and Foles. What does it say about Wentz that he is apparently the next apple of Pace’s eyes?
  • Bellows back to Philadelphia ?! I can see this happening from the point of view that the Eagles would consider it to make Wentz’s trade more salable to fans. ‘Who wouldn’t be happy to see our Super Bowl hero come home?’
  • I definitely can’t see the Bears having Wentz and Foles on their list. The two quarterbacks have a great personal relationship, but the professional dynamic just doesn’t seem sustainable for Wentz, who again would have to worry about the possibility of Bellows replacing him.
  • I think the negotiation of Eagles for Bellows makes sense and does not make sense.
  • For one, Foles is probably willing to restructure his contract to make it easier for the Eagles to get him back. He obviously loves Philly. Bellows have the right temper to be a backup. And maybe he can even be a good long-term starter for the Eagles, as he inexplicably plays much better here than anywhere else.
  • On the other hand, the Eagles talked about how they need to get younger and get away from nostalgia. Bringing Bellows back goes against that message. The presence of Bellows seems like a potential distraction for any young beginner (Jalen Hurts or a high pick in the 2021 NFL Draft) that the Eagles are advancing. And Foles’ viability as a long-term starter is in serious doubt after we saw him defeated by Gardner Minshew and Mitchell Trubisky in consecutive seasons.
  • Perhaps all of this is debatable and another team will end up making the offer stronger. With the word that a Wentz business is “close” to happening, I suppose we’ll see it this week.
