The NFL hired Maia Chaka as the first black female officer in the league’s history. She will work games during the 2021 season.
“I am honored to be selected as an NFL officer,” said Chaka. “But this moment is greater than a personal achievement. It is an achievement for all women, my community and my culture.”
Chaka joins the NFL after working on Pac-12 and Conference USA. She was selected in 2014 for the Official NFL Development Program, which identifies the official talent of the college in order to show them some of the same experiences as NFL officers before determining whether they have the ability to succeed as an NFL officer. “Maia’s years of hard work, dedication and perseverance – including as part of the Official NFL Development Program – earned him a position as an NFL officer,” said Troy Vincent, who oversees the league’s football operations. “In celebrating Women’s History Month, Maia is a pioneer as the first black official and inspires us to normalize women on the football field.”
Graduated from Norfolk State, Chaka graduated in education in 2006. She is a physical education and health teacher in the Virginia Beach public education system.
The NFL did not specify in which official position it will work.
