New York’s nursing home collapses into a huge fire; at least one dead

A building in a New York nursing home collapsed after a major fire hit the facility on Tuesday morning, leaving at least one person dead and others injured, according to reports.

As of Tuesday morning, two firefighters were among those injured in the fire at Evergreen Court, an assisted living facility in Spring Valley, including a firefighter who suffered a heart attack, according to New York’s FOX 5. Firefighters said a resident died in the hospital.

Previous reports have indicated that people may have been trapped inside. The first respondents were seen evacuating people from inside the building, they showed videos. Some of the elderly were evacuated to another facility, witness Benny Polatseck tweeted.

Another eyewitness, Mark Kennedy posted photos and videos of the fire on social media, which could be viewed for miles.

“The fire probably lasted about two hours, or maybe longer, before the building collapsed,” he told Insider.

The New York City Fire Department and a helicopter were also called in to help fight the fire. Belaaz reported. Early Tuesday, it was unclear how the fire started.

Evergreen Court is listed online as an assisted living facility with more than 200 beds.
