New York tries to terminate contracts with Trump Organization after Capitol riot

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Wednesday that New York City will terminate three contracts with the Trump Organization following last week’s riot in the Capitol building – the latest fallout for President Trump over the violence in Washington, DC

The mayor said the city would notify the Trump Organization that it would cancel agreements to operate the carousel in Central Park, two skating rinks and a golf course. He said that the agreements for the carousel and skating rinks would be closed in less than a month, but that the golf course could take longer.

“The president incited a rebellion against the United States government that killed five people and threatened to prevent the constitutional transfer of power,” said de Blasio.

“New York City will not be associated with these unforgivable acts in any way, medium or form, and we are immediately taking steps to terminate all Trump Organization contracts,” he added.

The Trump Organization backed down, with a spokesman telling Fox News that it was “another example of Blasio Mayor’s blatant disregard for the facts”.

“New York City has no legal right to terminate our contracts and if it decides to proceed, it owes The Trump Organization more than $ 30 million,” said the spokesman. “This is nothing more than political discrimination, an attempt to violate the First Amendment and we intend to fight vigorously.”

The New York City action was the most recent to hit the Trump Organization, which Trump chaired until he became president, following what critics say was his incitement to last week’s violence. Protesters stormed the Capitol while lawmakers certified the Electoral College’s vote after they attended a rally outside the White House, where President Trump spoke.

Three people died and two people – including a police officer – were killed during the unrest. Trump condemned the violence, but Democrats are moving forward with impeachment, with several House Republicans saying they would vote with Democrats.

Separately, the president saw his Twitter account permanently suspended as part of a Big Tech crackdown on Trump and those associated with him. YouTube said on Tuesday that it has removed new content from Trump’s official channel and will prevent videos from being uploaded for at least a week.

On Sunday, the PGA of America announced that the 2022 PGA Championship will no longer be held at Trump Bedminster, New Jersey.

Trump National Golf Club Bedminster is owned by the Trump Organization and Trump played golf there at times during his presidency.
