NCIS Season 18, episode 8 (titled “True Believer”) begins with two men driving down a road in Afghanistan. They stop when they see a school bus facing the wrong direction. They get out of the car to investigate and see that the bus driver has been killed and girls’ shoes and books are left in the seats of the bus. One of the men looks up and sees “Sloane NCIS” scrawled in one of the bus’s dusty windows.

Gibbs visits Sloane’s office and sees her working after hours. He sees that Sloane is still considering leaving NCIS when he picks up one of his travel books about Costa Rica. Sloane tells Gibbs that she is serious about moving on. “I’m serious,” says Sloane. “I’m ready for the sun and the sand and I’m not going to face another murder every day.” Sloane reveals that he is making an offer for a place near the beach in Costa Rica.

The NCIS team is on the case

Suddenly, Director Vance arrives at Sloane’s office and says that she is needed at MTAC. Gibbs is invited to come too. As soon as they arrive, it is revealed that a school bus carrying four 10-year-old girls and their companion was kidnapped and the driver was shot to death. They assume that the girls have been kidnapped by the Taliban. According to them, they wanted to prevent girls from attending school.

Sloane learns that Darya, a woman who was held captive with her in Afghanistan years ago, is probably the person who left the note for her at the bus window. Darya is head of an organization called Safe Passage, which provides food and shelter for girls. However, Darya was also trying to help girls learn math and English.

Vance obtained authorization for Sloane and Gibbs so that they could help rescue Darya and the girls. Darya means a lot to Sloane because she brought food and water when she was arrested. She also mended her wounds after being tortured by her captor.

Gibbs and Sloane say goodbye

One thing the team is trying to find out is who leaked the women’s bus route to the Taliban. Later in the episode, Gibbs and Sloane are alerted to a commotion outside. When Sloane turns around, she sees that it is Darya. His body was thrown from a truck. She had a note attached to it that said, “Go home or there will be more blood.”

Sloane is shaken by Darya’s death. She then tells Gibbs that this is exactly why she wants to leave NCIS. She couldn’t take any more situations like this and was insulted by Gibbs for thinking that Darya might be planning to kidnap the girls.

“That’s why I want to leave,” says Sloane. “We chase the bad guys. We put them aside. And nothing changes, except for us. Darya risked her life to help me, and we are all so distorted that we couldn’t see that basic human act for what it was. “

Gibbs and Sloane later discover that Darya’s Safe Passage partner has leaked the coordinates of the bus to the Taliban. He was responsible for the kidnappings of the girls.

Now that the case has been resolved and the girls are safely home, Sloane decides what he is going to do. Instead of moving to Costa Rica, Sloane decides to stay in Afghanistan and take Darya’s place in the Safe Pass. She says she will say goodbye to the NCIS team when she is ready. She then begins to tell Gibbs that he can visit her. Before she can finish the sentence, Gibbs and Sloane kiss.
