‘National Treasure’ series with green light at Disney +

The long-running project comes from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Cormac and Marianne Wibberley, who co-wrote the screenplays for the films.

Disney + gave the green light to a series based on National treasure film franchise.

The show, by writers Cormac and Marianne Wibberley – who wrote the scripts for Nicolas Cage’s two films (along with Jim Kouf in the first film) – and producer Jerry Bruckheimer will follow a new set of characters and reinvent the franchise through the eyes of his main character, a 20-year-old DREAMer named Jess Morales.

Mira Nair (Monsoon wedding, a suitable boy) is attached to direct. The series will explore the ideas of identity, community, patriotism and whoever writes the story as Jess and a diverse group of friends embark on an adventure to discover their mysterious family history and recover a lost treasure.

The project has been underway for almost a year. Bruckheimer said in an interview in May 2020 that he expected the series and a third film in the franchise to materialize: “Disney + is a much younger cast. It’s the same concept, but a young cast. The cast for the cinema it would be the same cast. “

Disney released both films, which were both successful: National treasure grossed $ 347 million worldwide in 2004, and sequel to 2007 National Treasury: Book of Secrets won $ 467 million.

Bruckheimer and the Wibberleys will executive produce the series.

National treasure continues the Disney + game plan to develop well-known IP-based series. In addition to its Star Wars and Marvel properties, the streaming service has current and future programs based on High School Musical, Turner & Hooch, The Mighty Ducks, Willow and Doogie Howser, MD
