National Guard convoy carrying COVID vax off the road at gunpoint

A man in western Texas was arrested for allegedly forcing a National Guard convoy carrying COVID-19 vaccines off the road on Tuesday and keeping 11 members of the guard at gunpoint, officials said.

Larry Harris, 66, of Arizona, is accused of following three National Guard vans at a gas station, later claiming to the police that he did so because he thought a kidnapped woman and a child were inside the vans, police said.

After successfully stopping the convoy, Harris identified himself as a detective and demanded to search the vehicles, Idalou police chief Eric Williams said in a statement.

Harris then ordered members of the guards to get out of their vehicles at gunpoint, officials said.

Police said Harris was speaking illegally when he was arrested. It was unclear what led him to believe that the kidnapping victims were being transported in vans.

Harris is facing several charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, illegal containment of 11 members of the National Guard and pretending to be a civil servant.

He was arrested on Tuesday on $ 44,000 bail.
