“Naomi” CW DC Drama Ava DuVernay’s pilot calls Kaci Walfall for the title role – Deadline

Ava DuVernay’s superhero drama in DC Naomi found his leadership. Kaci Walfall (Army wives, Power, The Lion King on Broadway) was chosen for the lead role in the dramatic pilot for CW, DuVernay’s Array Filmworks and Warner Bros. Television. Also defined as regular of the series is Alexander Wraith (Orange Is the New Black, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD), Cranston Johnson (Filthy Rich, P-Valley, Hap and Leonard) and newcomer Camila Moreno.

Naomi, the latest DC adaptation of the network, comes from DuVernay and Arrow executive writer and co-producer Jill Blankenship. Based on the eponymous comic book series that debuted in 2019, co-written by Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker and illustrated by revelation artist Jamal Campbell, the program follows the journey of a teenager from her small northwestern town to the heights of the multiverse. When a supernatural event deeply shakes her hometown, Naomi sets out to discover her origins, and what she does will challenge everything we believe about our heroes.

Naomi de Walfall is a quiet and confident high school student who is the adopted daughter of loving parents. Popular with all the kids in his military city, Naomi is not afraid to embrace her AP student nerd and comic book lover. After a supernatural event leads to the discovery of her powers, Naomi follows her hidden destiny.

Wraith will play Dee, the owner of a local tattoo parlor. When a strange event leaves the city in chaos, Dee implies that he knows more than he is willing to tell.

Johnson portrays Zumbado, the mysterious owner of a local used car garage. Having heard worrying rumors about her past, Naomi actively tries to avoid it, but a tense encounter leaves her both shaken and curious.

Moreno is Lourdes, a young woman with a sarcastic sense of humor who works in a vintage collectible store. She has an unrequited crush on Naomi and shares her obsession with classic comics. She is also happy to participate in Naomi’s schemes.

Blankenship and DuVernay will write and produce executives. The project will be produced by DuVernay’s Array Filmworks in association with Warner Bros Television, with Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes also as EPs.

Walfall made his Broadway debut at the age of 9 as Young Nala in The Lion King, and at the age of 11 she originated the role of Lavender in the First National Tour of Matilda. Previous TV credits include CBS’s Person of Interest, Starz’s Power, and a recurring role in the Lifetime series Soldiers’ Wives. It will be seen in the second season of Amazon’s anthology series, Modern loveas well as a recurring role on CBS ‘ The equalizer. Walfall is represented by A3 Artists Agency and Moxie Artists.

Wraith can be seen in a supporting role in an independent film The gate, alongside Olivia Munn, Shea Whigham and Bruce Dern. Previously, he served as a guest star on the CBS drama series Hawaii Five-O and reappeared as Vasily Reznikov in Orange is the New Black,among other credits. He is represented by Authentic.

Cranston is currently turning to the second season of Truth be told, opposite Kate Hudson and Octavia Spencer. Previously, he starred in the first season of the Fox series by Tate Taylor Very rich and it was a regular series on Sundance TV’s Hap and Leonard. He is represented by Buchwald and Link Entertainment.

Moreno, born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, graduated from the Drama Department at the University of Puerto Rico in 2016. She recently completed an MFA in acting at NYU, Tisch School of the Arts, where she played characters like Irina in Three sisters, Mayannah in Brainpeople, Cordelia in King Lear and Ofélia in Village. Based in Los Angeles, Moreno is represented by Gasparro Management.
