More winter weather on the way to the mountains

DANGER, Ky. (WYMT) – The third round is coming on Wednesday to Thursday night. Tonight, we must continue to see those light snow showers and blasts of snow pushing out of the mountains. Temperatures will drop from almost midnight, with temperatures even colder than on Wednesday morning.

Wednesday and Thursday

We will be dry most of the day Wednesday. The maxims will reach the mid-1930s with perhaps a few rays of sunlight. Unfortunately, this will not be enough to melt what we have seen in the past few days and it looks like we will be adding more winter weather on top of what is already on the ground.

A winter storm watch takes effect on Wednesday night at 7 pm and lasts until Friday at 7 am most.

Snow showers arrive on Wednesday night. Especially after dinner and around midnight. Let me say, models are everywhere in time and in totals for this next system. The overnight lows on Wednesday will be well below 30 degrees and will warm up during the night. This means that the snow will change to a winter mix and even rain on Thursday morning for some. Temperatures, again, will play a big role in this system. The good news is that it doesn’t look like we’re going to see freezing rain this time. Our northern half of our viewing area has a better chance of seeing snow accumulated on Friday morning.

The models do not take into account hail and rain on top of the snow, so when the rain reaches the southern half of the area, the snow will melt. Below are our thoughts, for now, on who has the best chance of seeing snow accumulation.

After everything falls, temperatures drop to minus 20 degrees on Thursday night. Whatever is on the ground will freeze on Friday morning. The highs on Friday will only reach the mid-20s, so very little will melt.

Extended Forecast

Sunshine finally returns this weekend with highs reaching 30 degrees on Saturday. The lows at night will remain cool with temperatures around 20 years.

We should warm up quickly on Sunday with some strong winds from the south. The treble will reach the mid-40s! Our next system arrives at the end of Sunday night, mainly on Monday morning. I really think this system is mainly a rain event, as nighttime lows remain in the mid 30s from Sunday to Monday.

The highs on Monday appear to be between 40 and 50 below. We will continue to keep an eye on this system as well.
