Monster Hunter Rise renews its feeding, training and Buddy systems

Capcom will add some interesting new features in the city to Monster Hunter Rise. The developer and editor of Monster Hunter Rise invited Polygon for a brief video presentation, detailing the changes in the food and training systems, as well as several others.

Like the new Wire Bug and the Riding Palamutes – which you can also use to move around the city – Monster Hunter RiseKamura Village will change a lot compared to previous Monster Hunter games. The changes are most noticeable when you look at the multiplayer in the city, the Buddy system, the Training Area and the new Dango food system.

Dangos are Japanese dumplings and are the main food in Monster Hunter Rise. At the Dango bar, you can buy three Dango on a stick, each with a different flavor. As in previous Monster Hunter games, you can use meal tickets, points or cash to buy your food.

In addition to increasing your health and endurance for your next hunt, the different flavors offer different advantages to help you. And with Monster Hunter Rise, there are more unique dietary advantages, which means you’re less likely to override an armor skill you’ve already equipped.

When building your three-piece Dango, you can combine the flavors you want. But just because you choose a specific flavor, and its related advantage, does not mean that you will succeed. Each benefit has a percentage chance of being activated each time you eat.

For example, the video presentation showed the Hunter buying Dango Money Maker (more money), Dango Medic (greater item healing) and Dango Bird Caller (which makes more Spiribirds get closer during the hunts). Money Maker had a 90% chance of activation, while Medic and Bird Caller had an 85% and 80% chance, respectively.

Players will unlock new flavors of Dango to match as they progress through the story. And there is, of course, a delicious new song and dance that plays every time you order a Dango.

The Buddy Plaza

Friends are a big part of Monster Hunter. When you are hunting alone or in a small group, you need your Palico to help you. But Move up expands the camaraderie system, allowing you to take a Palico and Palamute – the friendly riding dog.

You will manage these Buddies at Buddy Plaza, with the help of Buddy Expert Shirubei and Buddy Handler Iori. With their help, you can visit the Buddy Dojo to choose new Buddies after each mission.

When you hire a new friend, he joins your team. And although you can only have two with you on a given hunt, you can send the others on missions to collect items for you. If you are playing with friends, you can only take one Buddy – a Palico or a Palamute, depending on your choice.

Different palicos come with different movements, while all Palamutes appear to have similar gear slots. You can customize your Buddies with exclusive equipment at Smithy.

Multiplayer

Players need Senri the Mailman to switch between offline and online

Senri the Mailman (he’s actually a Palico, but whatever) will help you throughout your online game. You will also get any DLC you buy from Senri.

With Senri, you can choose to play online or offline, which determines whether your friends or other Hunters can join your group. Online and offline are switched on Monster Hunter Rise, then you will need to switch back and forth depending on your situation.

different Monster Hunter: WorldFriendly hunters can travel to your version of Kamura Village, and you can jump, explore or even train together. If you start an online mission, friends or random players will travel to your city before you dive into your hunt.

At the moment, we are not sure how or if Monster Hunter Rise will solve the problem that players had with Monster Hunter: World where friends couldn’t go on a story mission unless everyone had seen the scene in single player mode first.

Training

The training area in Monster Hunter Rise has a complete overhaul. Not only can your friends join you in the Training Area, but you can also practice against a giant mechanical monster doll.

In the Training Area, you can speak to Sekirei the Trainer (another Palico). They will give you training options for the “Toadversary” model. You can change the position of the head, the direction it is facing, whether it tracks the player and whether it is in standby or attack mode. You can even change how many Wirebugs you have access to or change the behavior of other targets in the training area.

When you lock your settings, Toadversary starts taking action – or stops taking action, depending on what you selected. The training area also tracks the total damage on the dummy, including the damage from your most recent combo.

Capcom will launch Monster Hunter Rise exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on March 26.
