MLB: The Show 21 is set to become the first PlayStation Studios game for Xbox when it launches on April 20.
In a PlayStation Blog ad for cover athlete Fernando Tatis Jr., the PlayStation account also revealed that the baseball sim will be the launch date and date on PS4 and PS5, along with cross-play support with Xbox One , Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S.
This follows a previous leak of box art for MLB The Show 21, with the image posted by Instagram user @anerdydad on Sunday, January 31st.
While the news may seem like a shock to any Xbox and PlayStation purist out there, has already been announced in 2019, MLB The Show 21 will serve as the franchise’s first multiplatform game.
In the PlayStation Blog post, Ramone Russell, Game Designer and Online Community Manager at San Diego Studio, revealed that MLB: The Show 21 would become the first MLB franchise title to reach a non-PlayStation platform.
He writes: “We are excited to share that, with our extension announced with MLB® and MLB players, MLB The Show 21 will be available to players on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X | S. This is a very exciting time for all of us, as the historic franchise will be accessible to more players than ever before. “
Russell also confirms that the cross-game between PlayStation and Xbox users will be in the game, as will the cross-progression to “whatever platform and generation you choose”.
While a baseball sim may not appeal to everyone, it is very important to see a PlayStation game being published on an Xbox console. Could this open the door to more games between consoles? With the acquisition of Xbox Bethesda set to change the gaming landscape in the coming years, all eyes will be on how the PlayStation and Microsoft will begin to work together.
