Tulsa coach Greg Montgomery said second-year safety Kendarin Ray was being treated for “some kind of concussion” after being at the bottom of a pile during the scrum.

“The only thing I will say is our program, our boys, we are a team that will defend and fight, said Montgomery.” We talk about faith, family, football, and the family will take care of the family. We are a team that has fought all year. We fight again today. From that point of view, our guys will continue to protect themselves and go from there, “

Mississippi State coach Mike Leach said he was not sure what triggered the melee.

“I’m not sure what exactly caused it,” he said. “It was something before the game too. We have never had a problem with that throughout the season, so I can only guess without seeing the film.”

Tulsa was trying a late kick to make an answer. But the team was marked by a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, which may have fueled spirits.

Mississippi State freshman Will Rogers made a pass for a touchdown and ran for another one in victory. The Bulldogs’ defensive back, Emmanuel Forbes, returned a 90-yard touchdown.
