An assistant to the Mississippi sheriff died after being involved in a shooting on Monday afternoon, according to reports.
The deputy to Hancock’s sheriff identified as Lieutenant Michael Boutte was flown to the University Medical Center in New Orleans after being shot and wounded near Kiln, Mississippi – which is located near the southeastern border with Louisiana. Boutte died shortly afterwards.
The suspect involved in the shooting was also flown to a hospital.
Authorities said Lieutenant Michael Boutte was responding to a home about 20 months north of Kiln when he was shot there.

Sheriff Rick Adam told Jackson, another WJTV deputy from Mississippi arrived to support and shot the suspect who shot the first deputy.

ATF New Orleans said its special agents were assisting the Hancock County sheriff’s office.
Boutte had been a law enforcement veteran for eight years and a veteran of the United States Air Force. Boutte later attended the United States Marine Corps Police Academy and served on the reserves in New Orleans, according to WDAM.
The press release goes on to say that during Boutte’s time with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Boutte was not only a leader for his people, but was awarded the Rescue Medal for saving a child’s life and was credited for leading National Crime Night and starting Silver Alert Database for the city of Diamondhead.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating the case.
