Mike Tyson calls Hulu’s unauthorized biographical series ‘cultural misappropriation’

Mike Tyson is unhappy with a biographical series about his life that is going to Hulu.

The streamer announced on Thursday that he gave the green light to a limited series of 8 episodes entitled “Iron Mike”, a program that will chronicle the life of the boxing icon.

The ad did not go very well with Tyson, 54, who posted a statement on social media calling fans “#BoycottHulu”.

“Hulu’s announcement to make an unauthorized miniseries of Tyson’s story without compensation, while unfortunate, is not surprising,” he began in the caption on Instagram. “This announcement in the wake of social disparities in our country is an excellent example of how Hulu’s corporate greed led to this misappropriation of Tyson’s life story.”

Tyson pointed out that the announcement was made during Black History Month, which “confirms Hulu’s concern for dollars over respect for the rights of black stories”.

“Hollywood needs to be more sensitive to black experiences, especially after everything that happened in 2020,” continued the athlete. “Mike Tyson’s true authorized story is in development and will be announced in the coming days.”

In addition, he said the streamer’s effort “could not be more inappropriate or deaf”.

The photos shared with the post contained the Hulu logo with a red cross, as well as an additional written statement, calling its limited series order “abhorrent” and said it represents “systemic racism that has plagued Hollywood for its entire existence. “

In addition, he said the project is among Hollywood’s “deaf attempts at diversity and inclusion”, adding that “behind closed doors, [Hulu] steal stories from the black community. “

He doubled his feelings on Twitter.

“Seriously Hulu ?!” he tweeted. “Stealing a black man’s story during Black History Month? #Corporategreed #boycotthulu.”

Hulu says the series, which comes from screenwriter Steven Rogers of “Me, Tonya” and director Craig Gillespie, will explore “the wild, tragic and controversial life and career behind one of the most polarizing figures in sports culture – the heavyweight champion Mike Tyson “.

It is currently unclear on which project Tyson will release more information in the “next few days”, although a biopic of the athlete is coming to an end with Jamie Foxx in the lead role. It is also unclear whether Tyson is involved in the biopic.
