Earlier today, Hulu announced that it had delivered a direct order for the series Iron Mike, a biographical series by Mike Tyson from Me, tonya screenwriter Steven Rogers and director Craig Gillespie with Mixedit’s Karin Gist as a showrunner.
This irritated Tyson, who released a very strong statement on social media, calling the series “cultural misappropriation” and “deaf in tone”, especially during Black History Month.

“Hulu’s announcement to make an unauthorized miniseries of Tyson’s story without compensation, while unfortunate, is not surprising,” wrote the boxing legend in an Instagram post (see below). “This announcement in the wake of social disparities in our country is an excellent example of how Hulu’s corporate greed led to this misappropriation of Tyson’s life story. Making this announcement during Black History Month only confirms Hulu’s concern about dollars over respect for the rights of black stories. Hollywood needs to be more sensitive to black experiences, especially after everything that happened in 2020 ”.
The boxer added that an “authorized” story is in development and that the project would be announced in the next few days.
Hulu declined to comment.
