Microsoft turned its sustainability report into a Minecraft map

Microsoft released its annual sustainability report today, and Minecraft developer Mojang decided to make it interactive. Simply called “Sustainable City”, the new Minecraft the map is available for free download at Minecraft marketplace and has also been added to the educational branch of the game.

The map features six included lessons, which Mojang says are “designed to give students a sense of responsibility for the planet”. Classes cover topics such as sustainable food production, drainage and water treatment and responsible forestry. A lesson teaches players how to explore a house built entirely from sustainable materials; another makes them venture into a landfill to find out what happens to non-recyclable materials.

The educational version of Minecraft has existed since 2016, but has become especially popular recently due to the increase in remote learning. Now, Microsoft says more than 35 million students and educators are licensed to use the platform.
