Microsoft is finally testing dual screen support with the Xbox Game Pass on the Surface Duo

Microsoft has released an update to the Xbox Game Pass Beta app that adds support for dual-screen devices, such as the Surface Duo. Games with dedicated touch-screen controls (such as Minecraft Dungeons) are supported and bring the dream of having one to life. portable Xbox console in your pocket.

On Surface Duo, the application’s scope when a game with touch controls is running will place the game itself on the top screen and the controls on the bottom screen, turning the Surface Duo into an improvised gamepad. Developers can adjust the on-screen controls specifically for their games, so some games may feature different buttons or touchscreen layouts.

The ergonomics really make playing on the Surface Duo feel right, as your fingers don’t understand how the real game works. Some games even support motion controls with the Surface Duo’s built-in gyroscope. For example, when playing Gears 5, you can observe the environment by physically moving your device.

Microsoft proved this kind of functionality when it first unveiled the Surface Duo in 2019, but unfortunately it was not ready at launch. It’s great to see that the feature is now available as part of the Xbox Game Pass Beta app. Hopefully, it will be released on the main Game Pass app soon. What are your thoughts?
