Metroid set proposed by Lego Ideas gains enough support for official production analysis

A proposal for a Metroid The Lego-based set gained sufficient support through the Lego Ideas scheme to be officially revised for production.

The Lego Ideas project encourages fans to build original works as a challenge, participate in contests and submit their own ideas for Lego sets. The last one involves a Kickstarter-style page, where an entry (created with Lego real or digitally) must have 10,000 support clicks to appear before the Lego panel.

Users can reveal additional ideas for the set as they get more support, but no money is provided. An idea is expected to win 100 supporters in 60 days, and other milestones up to 10,000 supporters in six months. After review and if the set is produced, the original designer will receive 1% of the total net sales, 10 free sets from his Lego set and credited to the set’s materials.

Although Lego does not accept ideas from third parties for which they have already produced sets (including previous sets of Lego ideas), previous entries have resulted in sets based on Sesame Street, Friends, The Flinstones, Mickey Mouse, Voltron, The Beatles, Adventure Time, Doctor Who, and more. Now, a set based on Metroid may come to fruition.

While writing this piece, the set was 513 days away and already had 9,948 supporters. As this article was almost finished, he reached his goal of 10,000 supporters.

The set includes a Samus Aran minifigure in his power suit, Zero Suit Samus minifig, two Space Pirates, the last Metroid baby sealed in a glass (plastic) container, Dachoras and Etecoons (first seen and rescued in Super Metroid).

The set also features Samus’ fighter; complete with removable roof to see inside the cabin, Technic lifting arm to implant Samus and secret door to launch Samus in his Power Ball form.

Samus’s ship can also be built as the Hunter Class combat ship (as seen in Metroid Prime) complete with stud-shooters and exhibitor, and a Galactic Federation fighter (as seen Metroid Prime 3: Corruption) that has a landing gear and a trap door to deploy Samus.

The giant Ridley can also be integrated with other designs based on previous entries, including Meta-Ridley, Omega Ridley, Proteus Ridley and (although technically not a real Ridley), Robo Ridley – or rather, Mecha Ridley. For fans of Bionicle, Ridley uses Mixel ball joints to give it sufficient posibility. Alternative colors from Space Pirates and helmet designs for Samus were also proposed.

Thanks to Lego Super Mario together and Lego NES, the idea of Metroid Lego may not be as far-fetched. We will keep you informed as we learn more.
