Andy Jassy will take over from Amazon after Jeff Bezos announced on Tuesday that he would step down as CEO of his e-commerce empire.
Jassy, 53, started at the company as a marketing manager in 1997 – just three years after Bezos founded it – and, in the decades that followed, helped transform Amazon into a profitable technology company.
It has long been said that Jassy was a potential successor to Bezos.
His rise as CEO will not take place until the third quarter of 2021, when Bezos, 57, will then become executive chairman of Amazon’s board.

Under Jassy’s leadership, the division has grown to a cloud platform used by millions, hiring large customers, including Verizon, McDonald’s and Honeywell.
The service competes with Azure from Microsoft Corp and Google Cloud from Alphabet Inc.
It raised $ 12.7 billion in the last quarter, an increase of 28% over the previous year.
Amazon has not yet announced who will replace Jassy on AWS.
