Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Criticized Rep. Georgia Marjorie Taylor Greene in a hard-hitting statement Monday night, referring to “crazy lies and conspiracy theories” as “cancer” for the Republican Party and our country. ”
“Someone who suggested that perhaps no planes hit the Pentagon on 9/11, that the horrific school shootings were pre-staged and that the Clintons shot down JFK Jr.’s plane is not actually living,” said McConnell in a statement, who didn’t mention Greene by name. “This has nothing to do with the challenges that American families face or solid debates about the content that can strengthen our party.”

Overt supporter of former President Donald Trump, Taylor Greene drew national scrutiny and bipartisan criticism ahead of the 2020 election for his support for the groundless conspiracy theory QAnon. She won the seat in Georgia’s 14th congressional district last November, running unopposed after Democratic opponent Kevin Van Ausdal’s late withdrawal.
Greene has faced more criticism in recent days for his promotion of Trump’s claims that the presidential election was stolen. She “liked” posts on social media that called for violence against prominent Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and suggested that several of the country’s deadliest mass shootings, including Sandy Hook and Parkland, were staged.
Taylor Greene responded on Twitter shortly after McConnell’s statement was released.

“The real cancer for the Republican Party is weak Republicans who only know how to lose elegantly,” wrote the Georgia Republican. “That is why we are losing our country.”
A growing number of prominent Democrats have called on the Republican leadership to remove Greene from his committee mission or expel her entirely from Congress. House minority leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Ca., Is due to meet with Greene this week.
