Another Norman Lear classic is back on TV. Sony Pictures Television is developing a remake of the acclaimed 1970s Lear series Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.
Comes from Schitt’s Creek co-star Emily Hampshire, who will co-write, will executive produce and star in the title character Mary Hartman; Letterkenny creator Jacob Tierney, who will co-write with Hampshire; and Lear and Brent Miller Act III Productions. Tierney will act as the showrunner for the series, which will be purchased for buyers in the coming weeks, I heard.
The updated Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman it’s about a woman from a small town (Hampshire) who feels like no one in every aspect of her life until she suddenly becomes a “verified” person on social media. The remake will bring the satirical look of the original program on consumer culture to today’s social [me]day world, where “typical consumer housewife in America” now became the product consumed when her nervous breakdown went viral.

Often referred to as one of the classic cult TV shows of all time, the original Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, which aired on a daily basis during the week from January 1976 to July 1977, was an innovative launch of the soap opera format and a subversive satire of America’s media / consumer culture. The series followed Mary Hartman, played by Louise Lasser, who won an Emmy nomination for her performance, through increasingly complex and compound events and life scenarios, often reflecting the changing social fabric of America in the 1970s. The new version brings a modern touch to the original characters and the fictional small town of Fernwood, OH.
Hampshire is coming out of a six-year season as fan favorite Stevie Budd in Schitt’s Creek, which swept the 2020 Emmy TV comedy categories. The sixth and final season of Schitt’s Creek was released on Netflix last October and has just been voted the 6th most broadcast series of 2020. Hampshire was nominated for a SAG award on Thursday alongside her co-stars in the Comedy Series Ensemble. Hampshire just filmed the Epix miniseries Chapelwaite opposite Adrien Brody, based on Stephen King’s short story Jerusalem’s Lot.
Tierney is the award winning producer, writer and director of the Crave / Hulu series Letterkenny, which just launched its ninth season in December and is among the best performing comedies on all streaming platforms. Tierney also wrote and directed the resources Twist, The Trotsky, Preggoland and the indie hit Good neighbors.
The project marks a meeting of Hampshire and Tierney; Hampshire starred in one of Tierney’s first films, Trotsky, and the two worked together on several of their other projects, including Good neighbors and more recently The Death and Life of John F. Donovan.
This is the last title in Lear’s catalog, the TV icon and his production partner Miller are handling their company’s initial general agreement, Act III Productions, with Sony Pictures Television. In addition to the acclaimed reimagination of One day at a time, Act III has the Emmy winner Live in front of a studio audience series of specials with Jimmy Kimmel, which stage live episodes of Lear’s classic sitcoms. In addition, an animated version of Good times was recently ordered by Netflix.
Documentary of Act III, Rita Moreno: just a girl who decided to go ahead, debuted with strong criticism at last week’s Sundance Film Festival. I carry you with me, The Sundance 2020 NEXT winner by Heidi Ewing, executive produced by Lear and Miller and distributed by Sony Pictures Classics, will open in theaters on May 21.
Hampshire is represented by Atlas Artists, Paradigm, Creative Drive Artists, KL Benzakein Talent and Felker Toczek Suddleson Abramson. Tierney is represented by ICM Partners and GGA.
