A Trump spokesman declined to comment or elaborate on the former president’s connection to the Georgia Republican. Greene’s House office spokesman Nick Dyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Greene’s claim about Trump’s endorsement comes as the Republican Party faces pressure to punish the freshman legislator for his adoption of conspiracy theories and his history of extremist and racist rhetoric. He picks up the Republican Party at a tense time, with its trajectory uncertain as party leaders acknowledge Trump’s legacy and his recent powerlessness in Washington.
Trump had previously called Greene, 46, a “future republican star”. Many other Republicans condemned Greene’s comments, but Republican leaders welcomed her into their ranks when she entered Congress and have so far refused to discipline her.
Greene became an instant lightning rod during his first weeks in office. She enthusiastically supported Trump’s false claims about a stolen election and promoted the “Stop the Steal” rallies that preceded the January 6 invasion of the Capitol building.
House Democrats have asked Greene to be expelled from Congress. On Thursday, Mayor Nancy Pelosi republican leadership in the House for allowing her to serve on the House Education Committee, citing her remarks about the Sandy Hook massacre. “What could they be thinking about?” Pelosi said. “Or is thinking about a word too generous to define what they might be doing?”
Greene embraced QAnon and far-right conspiracy theories, including the notion that Jewish-controlled space lasers were responsible for recent forest fires. POLITICO unearthed a plethora of racist videos she did last summer. Twitter blocked her from tweeting for 12 hours earlier this month, after she stated baselessly that the November 3 election in Georgia was “stolen” in a tweet that was restricted by Twitter “due to the risk of violence”.
Utah’s Mitt Romney, the only Republican senator to vote to condemn Trump last year, revealed the pair on Twitter on Saturday.
“Identical lies come together: Marjorie Taylor Greene’s nonsense and the ‘big lie’ of a stolen election,” wrote Romney.
House minority leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) Said that I will talk to Greene next week, but it is not clear whether it will face any repercussions. There is a recent precedent: McCarthy kicked ex-Rep. Steve King left the committees after the two met and King did not show enough remorse for defending white nationalism.
So far, Greene has shown no signs of giving up and has used the controversy to send fundraising appeals to his supporters.
“I will never back down. I will never give up. Because I am one of you. And I will always represent you, ”wrote Greene in a statement on Friday afternoon.
Trump and McCarthy met in Mar-a-Lago in Florida on Thursdaydisclosing a photo of the two posing at the resort. Trump and McCarthy discussed the strategy to help Republicans win the House back in 2022, according to a reading of Trump’s leadership PAC call to Save America.
Their relationship appeared to have changed after McCarthy said Trump was partly responsible for the January 6 Capitol riots. But McCarthy later went back and said he did not incite the protesters.
