Local doctor shares concern about side effects of COVID-19 vaccine for breast cancer survivors

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A breast cancer specialist from Wichita shared her concerns about the side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine for breast cancer survivors.

Dr. Therese Cusick said she saw many of these patients in Wichita with a common side effect after receiving the injection, swollen lymph nodes in the breast area.

The vaccine can cause a temporary swelling of the lymph nodes on the side of the vaccine and is scaring women with the recurrence of cancer.

“For most people this will not happen, but for some people it will, so it is still very important to get the vaccine,” said Dr. Cusick. “We just want to avoid unnecessary worries and there’s no reason to be anxious when it all gets better on its own.”

She is asking women to have the injection in the arm opposite the cancer and have a mammogram before being vaccinated.

If you have already received the vaccine, she recommends delaying your mammogram by 4 to 6 weeks.
