Live updates: growing number of Republican senators oppose Trump’s impeachment trial

A growing number of Republican senators say they are opposed to an impeachment trial of former President Trump.

Senator Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Told Fox News Sunday that Trump’s trial is “stupid” and harmful to the US, even though he is responsible for “part of what happened” at the US Capitol in January 6.

“Well, first of all, I think the trial is stupid. It is counterproductive,” Rubio said on Sunday. “We already have a burning fire in this country, and it’s like taking a bunch of gasoline and pouring it over the fire.”

QUICK FACTS

    • Republican senators – who will serve as jurors at the trial – are joining Trump’s legal defense, as they did during his first impeachment trial last year.
    • Arguments at the Senate trial will begin in the week of February 8.

House Democrats will bring the Senate impeachment charge of “incitement to insurrection” on Monday night. They hope that Trump’s strong Republican denunciations after the January 6 riot will translate into a separate condemnation and vote to prevent him from taking office again.
